On March 22, 2021 City Council approved Calgary’s Mental Health and Addiction Strategy, as well as the Investment Framework.

To support the implementation of the Strategy, The City of Calgary launched two streams, each with its own eligibility criteria:

  • Connect the Dots! to enhance existing programs and services
  • Change Can’t Wait! to test innovative ideas through fast pilot process

The aim of Change Can’t Wait! funding is to test innovative ideas that bring change at the individual, family, community, and policy or system levels to improve the mental health and addictions-related issues affecting Calgarians.

With the support of the City of Calgary, Calgary Korean Women’s Association offered the “Wellness Webinar Series: Promoting a Healthy Community” from August 2021 to February 2022.

The project included 20 webinars on topics related to wellness for supporting the community in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and equipping them with lasting healthy habits, knowledge, and skills to better take care of themselves and their families. Discussion topics were geared toward the needs of the community identified through several community surveys conducted by  CKWA, focusing on well-being, such as physical activity, healthy eating, behavior modification, and stress management.

Yoga Practices for Overall Health: This webinar helped attendees get familiar with yoga practices and shared tips on effectively managing a routine with yoga for a relaxed mind and body for overall health benefits.

Creating A Gym at Home: This webinar shared tips for putting together a fitness program at home or outdoors. It explained how to structure effective workouts in a home environment using inexpensive or no equipment.

Motivating Movement: This webinar shared the benefits of exercise, from treating anxiety and depression to improving brain function, and the amount of physical activity necessary to achieve the benefits.

Power Of Prevention: Disease prevention is extremely important for staying healthy. This webinar was particularly important in the context of COVID-19 and focused on the importance of proper hygiene and disease prevention as well as action steps on a daily basis to keep the immune system strong.

Food and Nutrition Focused Topics

Understanding Food Labels: Reading food labels can be confusing, especially for new immigrants or non-English speakers. This webinar shared the parts of the label that are important, what to look out for, and what the commonly used ingredients mean.

Optimum Nutrition for The Brain-REAL Food For Thought: This webinar focused on the effects of food on the body and mind, how to make healthy choices to provide the fuel needed to boost energy and keep it steady throughout the day.

Grocery Shopping Techniques: This webinar helped attendees learn how to ensure healthy grocery shopping techniques, including understanding food labels and how to use a plan to navigate the grocery store.
